Southern United Rugby Football Club (SURF) is Tokoroa’s only Rugby club. Formed in 2001, SURF is an amalgamation of Tokoroa and Tokoroa Pirates, formed in 1958 and 1973 respectively. Players come from within a 30-kilometre radius of Tokoroa.

SURF is based at the Tokoroa Memorial Sportsground, an outstanding sports facility operated by the South Waikato District Council that caters for Rugby, Netball, Rugby League, and Tennis. Also located on the site is the South Waikato Sports and Events centre, a large indoor sports facility.

The SURF whanau currently fields two men’s rugby teams, 1 women’s rugby team and 18 J.A.B teams. Reflecting Tokoroa, the SURF whanau is a mix of Maori, Pasifika and Pakeha players and supporters. This balance of cultures gives SURF a sense of identity and vibe that is unique within the Waikato rugby community. SURF strives to offer opportunities for young primary and Intermediate age students to play rugby, for those same students to stay in rugby through high school and the opportunity for them to then remain in the SURF whanau once they leave school. Our code of conduct encourages fair, competitive play, enjoyment, and respect to opposition teams. Our culture of promoting the SURF whanau values of inclusiveness and enjoyment, and give players, their whanau, and our supporters an opportunity to engage in our great game in a safe and encouraging environment that caters for all ages and skill levels. It also gives the SURF whanau the opportunity to proudly represent Tokoroa in a positive light.

Much like the town we live in, SURF is a warm and welcoming club that treats everyone like equals. SURF seeks to encourage quality behaviour and quality rugby by promoting a family culture of inclusiveness and togetherness.
Tokoroa is famous for producing All Blacks, such as Bernie Fraser, Walter Little, Keven Mealamu, Richard Kahui, and Brian Morrissey as well as internationals, Nicky Little (Fiji), Quade Cooper (Australia), Sean Maitland (Scotland) and Isaac Boss (Ireland). Outstanding Black Ferns players Regina Sheck, Toka Natua, and Chelsea Alley also hail from Tokoroa.

SURF’s Senior B’s are Divisional Champions, our Women’s team is their Divisional champion and our Premiers won the Waikato Senior First Division. With the increase in interest, we are planning to expand the SURF whanau in 2023 by adding a Colts side and a third Senior team, bringing us to five adult teams.
